Purpose of English Section in Bank Exams

Grammar, vocabulary, and reading comprehension are the three most important parts of English that are tested on bank exams. These questions help the people giving the test figure out how well the candidate can read, write, speak, and think critically in English.

Master Strategy to Prepare English for Bank Exams

Let’s talk about some useful ways to study English for bank exams:

    1. First, work on and review the basics of the English language and vocabulary.
    2. “Time Management” is the most important tool for this part. It will only take you 15 to 20 minutes to answer 25 to 30 questions.
    3. Use the rule of elimination for every English Section topic. In the elimination rule, you go through each choice one at a time and try to figure out which ones don’t fit the blank at all. Get rid of these choices one by one, and you’ll eventually get to the right one.
    4. You should practice this part every day with a “StopWatch” to get better at accuracy and speed. Before the real test, you should try to do at least two sectional tests and one practice test every day.
    5. Take some time to read the book Wren & Martin and learn the basic rules of grammar. These rules will help you get many things off your paper. In contrast to vocabulary, the rules and ideas are used over and over again. That means that if you practice enough, you should get between 5 and 10 points on the test.
    6. Every day, you should work on your language. Don’t forget to read newspapers and other helpful articles every day and learn new words.
    7. It is best to start with the vocabulary part so that you can get good grades all at once. It’s also the fastest way to get through.
    8. Next, you need to solve the reading comprehension part. If you want to do well on the RC, make sure you do the fact and vocabulary questions first, then the theme/main idea questions.
    9. After the cloze test, fill in the lines and then the para jumble questions. If your grammar isn’t very good, try it last because it might be hard and take longer.
    10. Every day, read The Hindu newspaper. People who need help and want to improve their spoken and written English will really benefit from this.

Tips for Improving Vocabulary Section

Having a good hand on vocabulary will help you in solving the topics in an efficient manner. Follow the below steps to have a strong command over vocabulary –

    1. To build your vocabulary you have to act smart. Every new thing that you read, whether it be a newspaper or an article, or a book, you will come across so many important words. Just jot it down in your vocabulary notebook and make sure whenever you come across a new word look it up in a dictionary or Google it. Keep a notebook where you note down its meaning, synonyms, antonyms, and its usage. Later, try to use these words in sentences of your own to revise the meanings. This practice has the added advantage of helping you enhance your understanding of the context of the passage for Reading Comprehension or Cloze Test.
    2. Solve the Vocabulary sections from previous years’ papers and time yourself to understand where you would stand at your current level of preparation. Also, it will help you understand what levels of words are being tested. This is important as unlike Grammar rules, which are limited, Vocabulary is an infinitely vast subject. The best you can and should do is prepare for the level that is being tested.
    3. Try out Mnemonic Techniques to remember vocabulary. This is an incredibly powerful way to quickly remember the meanings of often-asked words in the exam. Relate the words and their meanings with images and some stories.
    4. Practice Vocab questions every day. Bookmark the questions that you got wrong and practice them later to achieve accuracy. Solve questions on Synonyms & Antonyms, and Word Association pairs to increase the knowledge of words.

Tips for Improving Grammar

To improve Grammatical skills, follow the below steps –

    1. Go through the chapters of English Grammar one by one. Clear your basic concepts by understanding the rules and examples of the Grammar Chapters.
    2. Give proper time to understand the rules of Tenses. Tenses are the soul of English Grammar.
    3. Follow the standard books of Wren and Martin or School level Grammar books. Make sure to read error-free books by standard authors.
    4. Understand Subject-verb agreement. English sentences are structured following the subject-verb-object order (such as “Himani ran to the door,” not “Run to the door Himani”). In general, articles come before adjectives, and adjectives come before the nouns they modify. Modifiers should always be placed as close to their nouns as possible. For example Raman(subject) quickly(adverb) mailed(verb) the(article) long(adjective) letter(object).
    5. Focus on reading different genres and styles of writing, such as classic literature, textbooks, science fiction, science books, biographies, blogs, essays, and articles. Pay attention to how sentences are structured, word order, spelling, and creative variations the authors use.
    6. Learn the difference between confusing words. English has a lot of words that look, sound, and/or are spelled the same, even if they have very different meanings. These homographs (words that are spelled the same), homophones (words that are pronounced the same), heteronyms (words that are spelled the same but pronounced differently), and homonyms (words that are spelled and pronounced the same) cause a great deal of confusion and result in common errors. Remembering these common errors will help you avoid frequently made mistakes.
